Questions people actually ask
How is batting average calculated?
Divide hits by at-bats. Walks, hit-by-pitches, and sacrifices are not at-bats, so they change nothing here — a 185-for-580 season is .319 no matter how many times the hitter walked.
How is batting average calculated in cricket?
Divide total runs scored by the number of times the batter was out. Not-out innings do not add to the denominator, so 1,475 runs across 31 dismissals produces a 47.58 batting average.
Why does cricket use times out instead of innings played?
The average measures runs per dismissal. A batter who finishes an innings not out keeps those runs in the total without being charged a dismissal, so innings played and times out are deliberately different.
What is a good batting average?
Around .260 is a typical modern league average, .300 has marked a real hitter for a century, and .350 wins batting titles in almost any era. Nobody has reached .400 since Ted Williams hit .406 in 1941.
Why do walks not count?
Average only judges what happens when the at-bat ends in a hit or an out. That blind spot is exactly why on-base percentage and OPS exist — they credit the plate appearances average throws away.
What was the highest batting average ever?
Hugh Duffy hit .440 in 1894, the single-season record. In the modern game, Tony Gwynn’s .394 in strike-shortened 1994 is the closest anyone has come to .400 since Williams.
Does this work for softball or a beer league?
Yes — the formula is identical at every level. Enter your hits and at-bats and the math is the same one printed on the back of a baseball card.
Does a sacrifice fly lower my average?
No. A sacrifice fly is a plate appearance but not an at-bat, so it leaves average untouched — one of the few ways to make an out that costs a hitter nothing here.
How many at-bats does a batting title need?
Qualifying runs on plate appearances rather than at-bats: 3.1 per team game, which is 502 across a 162-game season. Fall short and the average still counts, it just cannot win the title.
What is batting average against?
The same fraction read from the mound — hits allowed divided by at-bats faced. It is how a pitcher’s season gets described in a hitter’s language, and elite starters push it under .200.
Why has the league average kept falling?
Strikeouts. Velocity, bullpen depth and pitch design have taken more plate appearances out of play entirely, and a ball never put in play can never fall in for a hit.
What is the difference between average and on-base percentage?
Average asks how often an at-bat became a hit; on-base percentage asks how often a plate appearance avoided an out at all, so walks and hit-by-pitches count. A patient hitter can trail by fifty points of average and still reach base more.
How do I set up batting average in Excel or Google Sheets?
With hits in B2 and at-bats in C2 the whole formula is =B2/C2. The fiddly part is display: a sheet shows 0.319 by default, so apply a custom number format of .000 to get the leading dot baseball actually writes. If you are filling a season down a column, =IFERROR(B2/C2,"") keeps the empty rows blank instead of showing an error.
Does Batting average mean the same thing in every era?
A .300 season meant something different in 1911, in 1930 and in 1968 — the same three digits sat at opposite ends of the league in those years. The archive reaching back to 1871 is what lets you see which one you are looking at.
What marks a season as exceptional beyond Batting average?
Average says nothing about power and nothing about walks, so a .330 hitter can be worth less than a .270 one. The weekly honours and the wire-service All-Star teams were decided by people watching the whole player, and they catch what a single rate leaves out.
