The voted ones, named: Most Valuable Player, Rookie of the Year, the Cy Young, the Gold Glove and the Silver Slugger among them. Every member of such a square won the same thing, so it is checkable to the season rather than argued about.

Round career totals the sport itself treats as thresholds — three thousand hits, five hundred home runs, three hundred wins, three thousand strikeouts. A milestone square is arithmetic from the record, not a reputation.

Everyone in the recorded major-league pool, from the nineteenth century to now. Baseball keeps the longest careers and the most club changes of any of these games, so the club squares are generous and the trouble arrives when a club has to cross an award or a career total instead of another club.

Yes — baseball is the game whose record keeps it well enough to ask. A square can want a player born in Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela or Canada, and it means the birthplace on record, never a national team.

By its length in seasons. Baseball keeps the longest careers of any of these games, so a condition can want a player who lasted eighteen of them, or fifteen, or ten, or as few as five. The decade a player was born in stands beside the decade he played in — they are different questions and a long career makes them further apart — and Cooperstown is a condition of its own.
