Total bases divided by at-bats: a single counts one base, a double two, a triple three, a home run four. It is a per-at-bat weight of raw power, not a percentage of anything.

League average floats around .400–.420 in the modern game. Regulars over .550 are real power threats, .690 lives on MVP ballots, and .800 has been touched only by Babe Ruth and Barry Bonds.

Barry Bonds slugged .863 in 2001, passing Babe Ruth’s .847 from 1920 — a record that had stood for eighty-one years.

Because it is total bases per at-bat, not a true percentage. A player who homered in every at-bat would slug 4.000 — the scale simply tops out at four.

Slugging isolates power; it ignores walks entirely. OPS adds on-base percentage on top, which is why it became the quick shorthand for a hitter’s whole line.

Count singles once, doubles twice, triples three times and home runs four, then add them up. A 30-double, 40-homer season is already 220 bases before a single or triple is counted.

Slugging minus batting average — the extra bases a hitter produces beyond simply reaching first. It separates a .300 hitter who doubles constantly from one who slaps singles, which raw slugging blurs.

Not at all. A walk is not an at-bat and adds no total bases, so it disappears from both halves of the fraction. That blind spot is deliberate: this stat is asking only what happens when the bat makes contact.

Babe Ruth, at .690 across twenty-two seasons — still ahead of every hitter who followed, in a career that began when the home run was a rarity.

Higher than the professional scale, and not comparable to it. Aluminum bats and thinner pitching push the numbers up, so a .600 in a college season is closer to ordinary than to elite.

You do not need a singles column. Because every extra-base hit is already counted once inside the hit total, total bases is simply hits + doubles + 2×triples + 3×home runs. So with hits in B2, doubles C2, triples D2, homers E2 and at-bats F2, slugging is =(B2+C2+2*D2+3*E2)/F2. Format it to three decimals to read the way a card does.

Slugging moved further across eras than almost any other rate, because the ball, the parks and the approach all changed. A figure that led a deadball league would be unremarkable in the 1990s.

Slugging ignores how often a batter reached base at all, so a free-swinging season can post a large number and still cost runs. A Gold Glove says nothing about the bat either — which is the point: the record keeps several separate verdicts because no one of them is the season.

Softball slugging is calculated exactly the same way — total bases over at-bats — so the figure this returns is directly usable there. Only the run environment differs, not the arithmetic.
