Questions people actually ask

What is OPS in baseball?

On-base plus slugging: one number that adds how often a hitter reaches base to how many bases his hits are worth. It became the standard shorthand because it catches both the walk and the home run.

What is a good OPS?

League average sits near .700–.720. An .800 season is clearly good, .900 is All-Star country, and 1.000 across a full year usually means MVP votes.

What is the best OPS season ever?

Barry Bonds posted a 1.422 OPS in 2004 — he reached base more often than he made outs that year. Babe Ruth’s 1.382 in 1920 held the record for the previous eight decades.

Do I need my OBP and SLG first?

Enter them if you know them. OBP is (hits + walks + hit-by-pitch) over plate appearances; slugging is total bases over at-bats — our slugging calculator works it from your hit line.

Why do analysts move past OPS?

It weighs on-base and slugging equally, though reaching base is worth more. Stats like wOBA fix the weights — but OPS survives because you can do it in your head at the park.

What is OPS+?

The same number adjusted for the league and the ballpark, then set so 100 is exactly average. A 150 means half again better than the field that year, which is how a deadball hitter and a modern one can finally be put side by side.

Who has the highest career OPS?

Babe Ruth at 1.164, with Ted Williams second at 1.116. No hitter since has finished a full career above 1.100.

Can OPS go above 2.000?

Over a short stretch, easily — a hot week will do it. Across a full season it has never happened; Barry Bonds’ 1.422 in 2004 is the ceiling anyone has reached.

What does OPS against mean for a pitcher?

The combined on-base and slugging line that opposing hitters managed against him. It reads on the same scale as a batter’s OPS, so an ace who holds hitters to .600 has turned the league into a lineup of pitchers.

Does OPS compare fairly across eras?

Raw OPS does not — the 1968 season and the 2000 season were played in different scoring worlds. That is exactly the gap OPS+ exists to close, and why era-relative rating is how our boards judge a card.

How is OPS calculated?

Add on-base percentage to slugging percentage — that is the entire calculation. On-base is (hits + walks + hit-by-pitch) divided by (at-bats + walks + hit-by-pitch + sacrifice flies); slugging is total bases divided by at-bats. The two halves are built on different denominators and added anyway, which is the known rough edge in the number and the reason OPS+ and wOBA were invented.

How do I calculate OPS in Excel?

If OBP and SLG already sit in two cells it is just =B2+C2. From a raw hit line it is one formula: =(H+BB+HBP)/(AB+BB+HBP+SF)+(H+2B+2*3B+3*HR)/AB, swapping each name for its cell reference. Format to three decimals — OPS is conventionally written .842 rather than 0.842.

What marks a season as exceptional beyond OPS?

OPS weights on-base and slugging equally, which nobody claims is exactly right. Selection to a season's All-Star team was never computed from a formula at all, and that independence is what makes it worth reading beside a rate — two unrelated methods agreeing is stronger than either alone.

Does this OPS calculator work for other formats?

Softball uses the same two components, so OPS transfers directly. What does not transfer is the benchmark: an OPS that is ordinary in one league can be exceptional in another, which is why the number wants a comparison set rather than a fixed grade.
