Because this rotation is built from a different slice of the record than the ones that use them. The NHL board leans on debut clubs, trophies, birth decade and games played instead, which gives it a noticeably different texture from the basketball or football boards.
As a straight group: four players born in the same ten years. It cuts across teams and eras of play, and it is the group most likely to look arbitrary until it is solved — two men born months apart can have careers that barely overlap.
Longevity ones, above all the thousand-game mark, which in this sport is a career statement in itself. A milestone group is always a counted threshold from the record rather than a reputation.
It does, and the trophy groups are what carry it there: awards that have been presented for most of the league’s history put a current winner in the same set as someone who won it decades earlier.
