NFL grid questions
What conditions show up on the NFL grid?
Clubs first — the teams a player appeared for — and then the things only a football career has: the round he went in, the college he came through, the position he played, and the counted honours, First-team All-Pro above all.
Are draft rounds used?
They are, and the first round is the one people reach for. It is a wider condition than it sounds: every first-round pick in the record qualifies, so the square is rarely the problem — the club it crosses usually is.
Do college programs appear?
Yes, as their own condition: a player who came through that school, whatever he did afterwards. It is the condition that rewards following Saturdays as well as Sundays, and it crosses the club rows at an angle nothing else does.
Which football players turn up on the NFL grid?
Everyone in the recorded NFL pool, one-season players included — a club square is far more often filled by a name you had forgotten than by a famous one. Football careers are short, so the board leans on what every career leaves behind: the clubs, the college he came through, the position he filled and the decade he played in.
Which NFL awards can a square ask for?
The Associated Press awards under their own names — Most Valuable Player, Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year — and the Super Bowl’s own Most Valuable Player. First-team All-Pro can be asked for once, or as a career with three or five of them. The Hall of Fame is a condition in its own right.
Does how long a career lasted count?
It can be the square itself. A condition can want a career of eighteen seasons, or fifteen, or ten, or five — and in a sport this short that is a real filter. Beside it sit the totals football quotes: ten thousand receiving yards, eight hundred receptions, forty thousand passing yards, a hundred sacks. The decade a player was born in is a condition too, and it is not the decade he played.
