AFL grid questions
What conditions show up on the AFL grid?
Clubs first, then the game’s own records: games and goals, disposals, marks, tackles, hit-outs and goal assists at round career totals, the Brownlow, Norm Smith and Coleman medals, the Rising Star, All-Australian selection, the Hall of Fame, and the position a player filled.
Do Brownlow votes count?
Yes, as a career total: a square can ask for a hundred career Brownlow votes as well as for the Medal itself.
Does a Brownlow won at another club count?
Yes. An award or an All-Australian selection counts whichever club it came at, as long as the player also played for the club it crosses. A decade still has to be spent there: a club crossed with the 1970s needs a season at that club in the 1970s. Each square’s own note says how it counts.
How are clubs named across a move?
By where the club played that season. South Melbourne’s seasons are South Melbourne and Sydney’s are Sydney, so a square names the club a player actually turned out for.
Which players turn up on the AFL grid?
Everyone in the recorded VFL/AFL pool, back through the competition’s Victorian years and on to the current clubs. The club squares carry the board, and the counted totals are what make a club square hard rather than routine.
How does All-Australian selection work as a square?
As a count. A square can want one All-Australian selection, or a career with three or five of them — the team named at the end of a season, so each selection is a dated fact rather than a reputation.
Is the length of a career ever the condition?
Often. Eighteen seasons, fifteen, ten or five each make a square of their own, and in a game this hard on bodies the long ones are a small list. The era a player belonged to and the Australian Football Hall of Fame are the other two conditions that ignore the club a square crosses.
Which leagues besides the AFL have a grid?
Nine more: cricket, college basketball, the NFL, college football, the NBA, the WNBA, MLB, soccer and the NHL. More AFL games: AFL Wordle, AFL Connections, Build an AFL Player and AFL Career Simulator. AFL Trivia Quiz asks three questions a day. Guess the AFL Team asks for the club of one era’s players. The AFL Ball Knowledge Dive asks for one right name, and the less obvious it is, the more it scores.
