Soccer grid questions
What conditions show up on the soccer grid?
Countries and honours. A square crosses the country a player represented with a title or an award — the World Cup, the European Championship, the Copa América, the Ballon d’Or, a Golden Boot — or with the position played and the decade played in.
Are clubs used?
Not yet. The recorded club histories are incomplete for too many careers to ask about a club fairly, so club squares are held back; countries, honours, positions and eras carry the board.
Which honours count?
Ones with a settled list of winners or selections: the Ballon d’Or and FIFA’s world player award, the World Cup’s Golden Ball and Golden Boot, the European Golden Shoe, the PFA Team of the Year and the FIFPRO World XI, and league awards such as the Pichichi.
Which soccer players can you use on the grid?
The recorded international pool: tens of thousands of names spread across every confederation, which is why the country squares work at all — a nation only becomes a condition when enough of its players are on record to fill a square several ways.
Are positions used?
They are, as four conditions: goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and forward. The board names them in words rather than in the position codes the record stores, and a position square crosses a country or an honour the way a club square would in another sport.
What else can a square ask for?
The decade a player played in, and how many seasons the career ran to: eighteen, fifteen, ten or five. With clubs held back, those two are what keep a board of countries and honours from asking the same question twice.
